At
19, Rod Donegan was looking towards a promising career as an
AFL footballer until a back injury resulted in a spinal fusion.
Rod found that keeping fit and staying on the move helped to
manage the ongoing discomfort, pain and stiffness left over
from the surgery.
Having played football, Rod already had a good understanding
of fitness, goal setting, determination and dedication that
is required to achieve results. Rod turned his focus to marathon
running and competed in five marathons, four in Melbourne and
one in Sydney. He also began helping others to achieve their
fitness goals and decided the next step was to start his own
personal training studio.
Rod could see from his experience that training needed to be
maintainable and fun for people to stick with it. He also wanted
people to look at their overall lifestyle and focus on health
rather than just losing weight or looking for a quick fix.
In May 1998 Fitness Zone Personal Training was opened in Melbourne
and has enjoyed continual growth and success. Rod has shown
an ability to enthuse even the most reluctant client. Some clients
have entered fun runs and other events that they themselves
would never have even thought about. Yet they have competed
and totally enjoyed the experience. At the last Masters games
held in Melbourne, several Fitness Zone clients competed. Rod
himself won a gold medal for the 24km kayak event.
New trainers have been mostly taken from clients. In fact ten
of Rod's trainers were originally clients that simply wanted
help with their own fitness.
Over the last six years Rod has trained a wide range of people
including many that present with back, knee, hip and various
other injuries. He began looking for the ideal exercise that
would help himself as well as his clients. The exercise needed
to be maintainable, low impact, ideal for all ages and above
all fun. The answer was obvious once he looked at the rebounder.
